Many would argue that once upon a time, giving to higher education--especially to scholarship funds for the poor--helped create social capital. I worry that nowadays a lot of higher education is a machine that mass produces widgets for a larger machine we call the market economy. Isn't the production of good citizens a rare phenomenon in these nefarious times? To what great end are we producing college graduates?
