Chalk one up for the generosity of the American People! The Washington Post reports that,"For weeks, many nonprofit organizations have been predicting that the billions of dollars that Americans poured into relief funds last year to help the victims of epic disasters -- the South Asia tsunami, Hurricane Katrina and the Pakistan earthquake -- would result in "donor fatigue." Donors would grow weary of charitable giving after contributing to disaster-relief groups and desert their regular causes, the theory went." Thankfully for people who depend on non disaster related charities, these dire predictions of the turned out to be false. "People have heard that it's important to help the victims of the hurricane but that it's also important to help everyone else," said Anthony De Cristofaro, executive director of the Combined Federal Campaign of the National Capital Area.

I just contacted our local AIDS service organization (Triad Health Project) to volunteer to help prepare Thanksgiving meals that will be delivered to their clients. Just before coming here, I sent an email to my partner and a friend, asking if they want to help, too.Ya know, there are a lot of us that will go to family or friends' homes to eat Thanksgiving meals, but we won't be involved in the preparation. Why not volunteer to help prepare a meal at a local kitchen/shelter that morning and then go enjoy Thanksgiving at your family or friends' home?The thought of doing this did not occur to me until I was simply asked in a monthly email from THP. Most people will at least consider helping, but they often need to be asked to even become aware of the the need and their ability to help.Take care, Jane!

The Gift of Life Insurance

Would you like to donate to the Charitable causes and organizations that you support? Are you a Philanthropist in the making but, do not think you have the resources to really give. Why does the Red Cross discourage donations of collected goods and individual items for disaster relief?

The American Red Cross posts:

"Collections of items require valuable and scarce resources such as time, money, and personnel to sort, clean, and distribute them, which come at the expense of the Emergency activities Relief workers are attempting to perform. The Red Cross has neither the resources, nor the logistical set-up, to properly handle these types of donations, and therefore cannot accept them.

In addition, because the organization has no way of knowing what spontaneous individual Donations or unsolicited collections of items will consist of, and therefore cannot ensure there will be enough of a particular item to distribute it equitably, or if the Donated products will even be appropriate for the relief effort.

Shipping Donated goods is also costly and particularly difficult in the aftermath of a disaster, as roads are often damaged or impassable, and easily clogged with shipments of non-priority items. The Red Cross makes every attempt to procure items locally to save money by minimizing transportation and storage costs. "
